English made Men’s shoes (and boots) are generally made in fittings E, F, G and H and these can be classified simplistically as follows:
E= Narrow
F= Medium
G= Wide
H = Extra Wide (sometimes known as 5 fitting)
(sometimes known as 6 fitting)
(sometimes known as 7 fitting)
(sometimes known as 8 Fitting)
Between fittings in the same size there is approximately 1/4″ difference in girth measurement.
Fittings with an X suffix are half as wide again, FX for example is half way between F and G.
Although there is no absolute standard for fittings, there is a table of measurements and we believe our shoes are made as near as it is possible to get to that “standard” as they have been for over 130 years.
The bulk of our styles are made in F fitting, as statistics show that worldwide this is the most appropriate fitting for a majority of males, but we also offer a good selection of G fitting shoes.

Shoe Size

When choosing your shoe size there are a few things to consider, if possible it is always better to relate to what you may have worn that is similar in the past. Shoes are usually marked inside with a size and sometimes a fitting. This will be a useful guide to what you are looking to buy. For example ‘Quality English Made Leather Shoes’ you have in the past will relate to similar items from Barker, Loake and John White now. And it is well worth checking your similar old shoes first before you order your new pair.

It is worth noting that the half size (where available) is a very small graduation in size, but can make a difference to fit and feel.

Quality footwear are made on a ‘Last’, this is basically a former upon which the shoe is built up. There are different ‘lasts’ for different shoes, which is why shoes fit different. Quality footwear usually has the ‘last’ name or number marked on, so if you have had the same brand in the past, it is a useful guide into choosing your new footwear.

All shoes will vary slightly from brand to brand, and it is impossible to exactly predict that a pair of shoes will fit without trying them. However with a few simple checks the margin for error can be almost eliminated!
